Wire balustrades are designed for low-level applications with fall heights of 600mm and below — defining the edge of decking, garden terraces, patios and steps where a full guarding barrier isn't required by building regulations. What Is a Wire Balustrade System?

A wire balustrade uses horizontal stainless steel cables tensioned between posts to form a barrier you can barely see. Each 48.3mm post comes with a welded base plate and pre-installed saddle for the handrail; the 3mm wire rope threads through eyebolt connectors and is tensioned with swageless turnbuckle fittings — no specialist swaging tools needed. With the 48.3mm stainless handrail tube fitted, the finished height is 1100mm.  Wire balustrade is also known as cable railing — particularly for decks — and the system works the same way whichever name you know it by.

The wires sit at 132mm centres — 14-hole posts (7 holes each side) serve mid-run and corner positions, and 7-hole posts start and end each run.

Where Is a Wire Balustrade Suitable?

Honest answer: wire balustrade is a low-level system. UK building regulations require guarding wherever there's a drop of more than 600mm, and guarding infill must prevent a 100mm sphere passing through any gap. With wires at 132mm centres, this system is not designed to meet that infill requirement — so we recommend it for fall heights of 600mm and below, where guarding isn't mandated: deck edges close to ground level, garden terraces, path and border definition, and low steps.

Every post is 48.3mm diameter 316 stainless steel with a welded base plate and a pre-installed saddle ready for the handrail tube. 7-hole posts start and end each run. 14-hole mid posts (7 holes each side) sit along straight runs, and 14-hole corner posts carry the wires around a change of direction. We recommend spacing posts at 1.5m to keep the wires taut and sag-free.

Handrail — 48.3mm Stainless Tube

The system is finished with a 48.3mm stainless steel handrail tube that sits in the saddles on the post tops, giving a comfortable rail and a finished height of 1100mm. A matching set of rail fittings completes it: raised end caps, an in-line connector for joining lengths, a wall flange for runs ending at a wall, and an adjustable elbow for steps and slopes.

Connectors & Fittings

Swageless turnbuckle connectors tension each wire with fine adjustment — no swaging tools required. Swageless plain buckle connectors terminate runs where adjustment isn't needed. Eyebolt connectors anchor the wire at the posts, locking collars secure the wire inside the fittings, and the 48.3mm post fitting adaptor ring gives a clean transition at the post. All fittings are 316 stainless steel.

Installing and Tensioning a Wire Balustrade

Plan your runs first: mark post positions at 1.5m spacings using a string line, fix each post plumb into solid structural material, then thread the wires from the start post through the mid posts to the far end. Tension each wire with its turnbuckle connector, working from the bottom wire up, until every wire is taut with no visible sag — then re-check the first wires, as tensioning later runs can slacken earlier ones. How far apart should the posts be?

We recommend posts at 1.5m spacings. This keeps the wires taut between supports and prevents sagging. Keep individual runs to a sensible length and start a new run for very long stretches so tension stays easy to maintain.

How do I tension the wires?

Each wire is tensioned with a swageless turnbuckle connector — thread the wire, secure it with the locking collar, and turn the buckle body until the wire is taut with no visible sag. Work from the bottom wire up and re-check the first wires when you finish. No swaging tools are needed, and the same fittings let you re-tension in minutes at any time.

Do wire balustrades need maintenance?

Very little. Check the wire tension periodically — especially after the first few weeks and after extreme weather — and re-tension via the turnbuckles if any wire shows sag. An occasional rinse with fresh water keeps the 316 stainless steel bright, particularly in coastal locations.
